Most new courses get a soft opening and a few seasons to grow in before anyone judges them. Fields Ranch East got the Senior PGA Championship in its first year. The East course at PGA Frisco, designed by Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner and opened in 2023, hosted that championship as the first event at the new home of the PGA of America, and it is already scheduled to host the PGA Championship in 2027 and again in 2034. There is no easing in at that address. The course was built to be examined, immediately, by the best senior players in the world first and by major championship fields soon after.

The context matters. PGA Frisco is not a resort that happens to have golf. It is the PGA of America's headquarters campus in Frisco, Texas, with the East as its championship stage. When an organization that runs the PGA Championship and the Ryder Cup in America builds its own course, the design brief is not subtle. Hanse and Wagner were asked for a course that could host majors for decades, in Texas heat and Texas wind, on land that had to be shaped into championship golf rather than found that way.

## A new course with an old job

Hanse's reputation rests on restoration work and on new courses that play with a classic economy, firm ground, options off the tee, trouble placed where it changes decisions rather than where it photographs well. Frisco tests whether that philosophy stretches to a purpose built major venue. The early evidence is the calendar itself. The Senior PGA came in 2023, the year the doors opened. The PGA Championship follows in 2027 and 2034, dates awarded before the course had any tournament history at all. The PGA of America is betting its flagship event on this ground twice in eight years. Institutions do not make that bet on a course they privately doubt.

Texas golf adds its own terms. Wind is the defending champion at most serious Texas courses, and a Hanse design that relies on ground game and angles gives the wind something to work with. A course built only for aerial target golf would play the same in May and September. A course with options plays differently every day the breeze changes direction, which is precisely what a major venue needs when it has to stay interesting across four rounds and across decades of returning championships.

The Dallas Morning News ranked Fields Ranch East No. 34 in its 2025 Texas Top 100. For a course opened in 2023, in a state with Colonial, and a deep bench of private clubs with a century of history, No. 34 is a strong debut rather than a snub. Rankings reward familiarity, and familiarity is the one thing a two year old course cannot have. Watch the number over the next decade. The 2027 PGA Championship will move it more than any panel vote.

## Access, and the honest limits

Fields Ranch East is a resort access course at PGA Frisco, which separates it from most major venues. You can book it. That puts it in a small and useful category alongside courses in our [Frisco town guide](/blog/the-best-golf-courses-in-frisco-tx/) and the broader [Texas state ranking](/blog/the-5-best-golf-courses-in-texas/): a genuine championship test that a public golfer can actually play, walk the same ground the 2027 field will walk, and find out what the wind does to a Hanse approach shot at four in the afternoon.

The concession is real. A course this young has no patina, no famous finish in the game's memory, no hole that a generation of viewers can picture with their eyes closed. Everything at Fields Ranch East is promise and infrastructure right now, and promise is not the same as history. The trees will grow, the 2027 championship will write the first famous chapter, and the course will be judged properly after that.

Until then, judge it on the bet. The PGA of America moved its headquarters to Frisco, built its championship course there, opened it in 2023, and put two PGA Championships on its calendar. Fields Ranch East does not need to argue for its importance. Its importance has a date: 2027, when the field arrives and the course stops being a plan and becomes a record.
