Golf from Downtown Manhattan: The Complete Playbook

Our anchor point is Downtown Manhattan, the Financial District around Wall Street. Times are approximate off peak drive times or standard transit times from there. Add 15 to 30 minutes at rush hour and on summer Saturdays. This is the decision guide the rest of the series hangs off: where to play, practice, and join if your day starts in Lower Manhattan, sorted by the three things that actually decide it. Time, car, and budget.

Our take: With a full day and a car, play Bethpage. With a half day, Ferry Point or Van Cortlandt. With two hours, a simulator in FiDi. With a membership budget, look at Liberty National first and Westchester second.

You have 2 hours

Five Iron Golf's FiDi location at 22 Stone Street is in the neighborhood, with bays from about $29 an hour on late night promotions and roughly $50 to $90 an hour at standard times in recent listings. Chelsea Piers' range is a 15 minute ride up the West Side. A lesson hour downtown beats a rushed nine across a bridge.

You have a half day

Ferry Point is the premium answer at 30 to 40 minutes by car. Van Cortlandt is the value answer at about 55 minutes on the 1 train. Dyker Beach is the Brooklyn answer at about 40 minutes by car. Each has a full guide in this series.

You have a full day

Bethpage, planned the night before with the resident booking window, or a two course Long Island day adding Eisenhower Red or Harbor Links. New Jersey version: Rock Spring in the morning, Galloping Hill on the way back is too much golf for most, pick one and lunch properly.

You have a membership budget

Liberty National is 25 minutes away and built for Downtown members. The classic alternative is a Westchester or Greenwich club at 45 to 65 minutes with a Metro North option. The cost tiers guide lays out the estimate bands. Decide by drive time first, pedigree second. A club you reach in 30 minutes gets played three times as often as a famous one 90 minutes away.

You have no car

The transit ranking is its own post: 1 train to Van Cortlandt, LIRR to Bethpage, R plus bus to Dyker. Manhattan golf without a car is a solved problem if you store clubs smartly and book around train schedules.

FAQ

What about Midtown and uptown starts?

Midtown shifts everything north and east by 10 to 15 minutes and makes Westchester and the Bronx faster than Brooklyn. The neighborhood notes in the half day guide adjust for it.

Where should a Downtown beginner start?

Lessons and a simulator first, then Van Cortlandt or Forest Park. The beginner guide in this series lays out the first 90 days. Prices in this guide were checked in October 2026 against published course listings and recent reporting. Greens fees move by season, day, and residency, so confirm the exact rate when you book. Private clubs do not publish initiation fees or dues. Every private figure here is an estimate band based on public reporting, labeled as an estimate, and the only accurate number comes from a club's membership office.
