Manhattan golfers with a car and a free weekend have three classic directions. Each has a public anchor good enough to build the trip on, which matters when the private invitations do not come.
Our take: Montauk Downs anchors the Hamptons direction, the North Fork is the quiet golfer's weekend, and Atlantic City's classics are the underrated drive south.
Montauk Downs is the public centerpiece, a state park Rees Jones course at the tip of Long Island, with the East End private cluster around it for anyone with an invitation. Two and a half to three hours from Downtown. Stay in Montauk, play Downs twice, and eat seafood. The full Downs guide is in this series.
Island's End in Greenport and the nine at Shelter Island's Goat Hill, properly Shelter Island Country Club, make a gentle golf and wine country weekend at about two hours out. Lower key, lower cost, and back by Sunday lunch if you leave early.
About two hours down the Parkway: Seaview's Bay and Pines courses, the Donald Ross and Hugh Wilson classics that hosted a PGA Championship era of golf, plus Atlantic City Country Club by invitation or stay and play access when offered, and Twisted Dune for a modern links style round. The most underrated golf weekend from Manhattan, at winter and shoulder season prices well below the Hamptons.
Book the anchor course before the hotel. In all three directions the golf is the scarce resource in season, not the room.

How far ahead for Montauk Downs in season?
As early as the state system allows for your residency class. Summer weekends go fast.
Is Atlantic City really two hours?
Off peak from Downtown, yes, about 120 miles. Friday evening in summer is not off peak. Prices in this guide were checked in October 2026 against published course listings and recent reporting. Greens fees move by season, day, and residency, so confirm the exact rate when you book. Private clubs do not publish initiation fees or dues. Every private figure here is an estimate band based on public reporting, labeled as an estimate, and the only accurate number comes from a club's membership office.
