Course Comparisons / Texas

This is the rare comparison where the municipal course is the famous one. Memorial Park is a city course in Houston that hosts the PGA Tour. BraeBurn is a private club that opened in 1926, a decade before Memorial Park's 18 hole course, ranked No. 47 in the Dallas Morning News 2025 Texas Top 100, and most Houston golfers outside its membership have never played a hole there. Normally the private course wins the prestige argument by default. In Houston, the muni took the prestige, the tour event, and the national lists, and left the private club holding tradition and quiet. That inversion is worth understanding, because it almost never happens.
Memorial Park's story starts in 1912 as a nine hole course with sand greens near the Camp Logan hospital. John Bredemus built the full course that opened in 1936. It hosted the PGA Tour's Houston Open from 1951 to 1963, and then, after a long gap, the modern chapter arrived: Tom Doak renovated the course in 2019 for $18.5 million, funded by the Astros Golf Foundation, with Brooks Koepka as player consultant. The Houston Open returned from 2020. Memorial Park now ranks No. 7 on Golf.com's list of the best municipal courses in the United States and No. 52 in the Dallas Morning News 2026 Texas Top 100. A municipal course, in the top 10 munis in America, hosting tour players on a Doak renovation paid for by a baseball foundation. Houston did a strange and wonderful thing here.
BraeBurn's case is older and quieter. Also a John Bredemus design, opened in 1926, private, in Harris County. Its No. 47 ranking in the state's top 100 in 2025 actually places it a few spots ahead of where Memorial Park landed in the 2026 list, a detail private club members will be happy to point out, and fairly. Two Bredemus courses, ten years apart, in the same city, both in the Texas top 100 conversation a century later. Bredemus is the hidden thread of Houston golf and this comparison is really his story told twice.
On the golf, Memorial Park wins for reasons that go beyond the renovation headlines. A tour venue has to test the best players in the world on television while remaining a municipal course for residents the other 51 weeks, a dual job almost no course in America is even asked to do. Doak's 2019 work, with a tour player consulting, threaded that needle, which is why the national muni ranking and the tour's return both followed. In our Houston ranking and in the Texas state ranking, Memorial Park is the Houston course we send every visitor to first, because every visitor can actually go.
That last point decides the day and access scores completely. Memorial Park is municipal. Anyone can book it. BraeBurn is private, members and guests only, with costs in a high estimate tier that the club does not publish. A comparison can respect BraeBurn's Bredemus bones and its state ranking while admitting that, for 99 percent of Houston golfers, it is a name on a list rather than a round they will ever play. Access is not a footnote in our scoring. It is 20 points of the rubric, in the value and access category, and Memorial Park sweeps it.
The concession to BraeBurn is real. Private club golf at a good 1926 Bredemus course is a different and in some ways better day than fighting for a tee time at a famous muni, walking in a tour crowd's footsteps with a public pace of play. Members get their course in a condition and at a tempo the public cannot buy. And the ranking detail stands: in the most recent year to year comparison available in the record, BraeBurn at No. 47 sat ahead of Memorial Park's No. 52 in the Texas list. Panels have not unanimously crowned the muni.
Verdict: Memorial Park wins, decisively for the public golfer and clearly enough overall, on the strength of the Doak renovation, the tour history from 1951 to today, and the simple fact that Houston built a top 10 American muni and opened the gate. Pick BraeBurn anyway if the invitation comes, because a private 1926 Bredemus in the state top 50 is a round worth taking precisely because so few can. But the headline of Houston golf is a city course with sand green beginnings, and that is exactly as it should be.
