A first signature course is a statement, and Davis Love III made his at Fripp Island. Ocean Creek, designed with Paul Cowley and opened in 1995, was Love's first signature design, and Golf Digest named it one of the 10 best new courses in America when it opened. First efforts usually get a polite reception and a quick fade. This one got a national list and then held its place as one of two courses at Fripp Island Resort in Beaufort County for three decades.

Fripp Island is the setting, and the setting does real work here. This is Lowcountry golf at the edge of the marsh, where the land barely rises above the water and the design has to find its interest in angles, wind and edges rather than elevation. Ocean Creek's answer is in its name. The signature sixth and seventh holes sit on Old House Creek and its marsh, and those two holes carry the round. Play them in a breeze, with the marsh grass moving and the creek setting the line you have to respect, and you understand what the course is about better than any aerial photo will tell you.

## Dunes where you do not expect them

The surprise in the layout is the ground itself. Four distinctive rolling dune ridges come into play across the course. On a flat barrier island, ridges are character. They create lies that are not level, approaches that are not stock, and holes that feel found rather than graded flat and decorated afterward. Resort golf in South Carolina often means a pleasant loop through palms and lagoons where every hole could be swapped with the one before it. Ocean Creek's ridges break that pattern. The terrain keeps changing the question.

The card is friendly on paper. Par 71, 6,392 yards from the Black tees, with a 72.1 course rating and a 139 slope. Read those last two numbers together. The rating says a scratch player should expect a fair fight. The slope says a higher handicap player will find trouble in quantity, which is exactly what marsh edges, creek lines and dune lies do to a scorecard. This is not a long course. It is a course where the miss is expensive, and where the smart play is often the shorter club that stays on the dry side of a hazard line.

Love's playing career gives the design a readable logic. He was a long hitter who won with precision, and his first course asks for the second quality more than the first. The resort player who arrives planning to overpower 6,392 yards usually leaves talking about the sixth and seventh, the holes where the creek decides what a good shot even means.

## The Fripp Island day, and the caveat

Ocean Creek is resort golf, open to resort guests and public play, and it is one of two courses at the resort, which makes it a natural anchor for a two round trip rather than a single stop. Our [South Carolina state ranking](/blog/the-5-best-golf-courses-in-south-carolina/) is dominated by famous names from Kiawah to Hilton Head, and Fripp Island sits a step below that celebrity tier. That is the honest placement, and for many golfers it is also the appeal. The island is quieter, the golf is less of a production, and the course itself holds up under scrutiny better than its fame suggests.

The concession: a par 71 under 6,400 yards will not satisfy the player who measures a course by the back tee total, and resort conditions and pace vary the way resort conditions and pace always do. If you want a championship examination, the Lowcountry has longer and harder options.

But a first design that lands on a national best new list, on an island, along a creek, over dune ridges its architect had the sense to use instead of flatten, has earned its profile. Ocean Creek is the rare celebrity course where the celebrity actually drew something worth playing.
