Cape Girardeau is a river town, built on the Mississippi bluffs halfway between St. Louis and Memphis, and its golf splits the way river towns often do. There is one course people drive across the state to play, one old club that anchors local golf life, and one municipal course where most actual rounds in town happen. Three courses, three different jobs. The ranking below respects that split instead of pretending the three are chasing the same thing.

We score the golf first, then the day, then access and value, and in Cape Girardeau access is the whole story below the top spot. The No. 1 course is private. So is No. 2. If you are a visitor with no connections, your Cape Girardeau golf trip is the third course on this list plus a long look at the river, and any honest ranking should say so up front.

1Dalhousie Golf Club

Dalhousie is a Jack Nicklaus design on land that takes its name from Dalhousie Castle, and Golfweek ranks it in the top five courses in Missouri, in the company of the state's famous championship venues. That context matters. Missouri's top tier is not soft. A private club in a town of Cape Girardeau's size holding a place on that list is the entire argument for this ranking, and it is a strong one.

Nicklaus courses divide opinion because the demands are usually plain: carry the hazard or take your medicine, find the correct side of greens that are built in sections, and accept that the course will keep asking until the last hole. Dalhousie follows that philosophy on rolling ground outside town, with room off the tee and the examination concentrated on the approach shots, which is where Nicklaus always preferred to hold it. The concession is the obvious one. Almost nobody reading this can play it without a member's invitation, and a course that exclusive in a small market will always be more talked about than played. Talked about, in this case, with reason. It is No. 1 in Cape Girardeau by a margin nobody locally disputes.

2Cape Girardeau Country Club

The country club is the town's golf establishment, the in-town private course where Cape Girardeau's golf life has actually been lived: the member games, the club championships, the juniors who learned the game an easy drive from home instead of out at a destination development. Courses like this rarely win design arguments and are not trying to. Their value is continuity, a known test on known ground, played by people who have walked it for decades.

Judged purely as architecture it gives ground to Dalhousie, and the members, most of them, would not pretend otherwise. Judged as a club, it is the centre of the local game in a way the bigger course deliberately is not. Second place here is really two different verdicts: second-best golf course in town, first in the daily life of golf in Cape Girardeau. Both can be true, and are.

3Jaycee Municipal Golf Course

The Jaycee course is the public option, the municipal track where the town's public golfers, beginners, and after-work leagues actually play. Every ranking on this site needs a course like this to keep it honest, because this is where the game's numbers come from. The golf will not be confused with the two private courses above it: the presentation is a city budget's presentation, the architecture is functional rather than inspired, and a wet spring shows here first.

None of that is a reason to rank it with anything but affection. It is affordable, it is open to anyone who shows up, and in a town where the top two courses sit behind gates, it is the only round on this list a stranger can simply go and play. For a visitor, that makes it the de facto No. 1, whatever this ranking says.

Cape Girardeau, then: a state-ranked Nicklaus course on castle-named land, an old club doing the quiet work, and a muni holding the door open for everyone else. The river keeps rolling past all three.
