For years the best players in the world started their seasons at La Costa. The Tournament of Champions lived here, then the WGC Match Play, and the photographs from those weeks, eucalyptus trees, low coastal light, tour bags on a range five miles from the Pacific, are still the defining images of Carlsbad golf. The town has since become the club industry's workshop, the place golf equipment gets designed and tested. The courses remain the public face.

Carlsbad golf is resort golf, mostly, played in marine air that keeps summer rounds civilized and winter rounds downright smug. We score the golf first, then the day, then access and value. History counts here, but only where the course still backs it up.

## 1Omni La Costa Resort Champions Course

The Champions Course is the tournament course, the one that hosted the Tournament of Champions and the early WGC Match Play fields, and it still carries itself like it. The routing moves through mature grounds with water and bunkering placed where a tour player would look for them, and the closing stretch has the bones of a match play venue: risk available, mistakes priced.

The concession is that resort stewardship over the decades has sanded some edges. Purists hunting for untouched classic architecture will find a course that has been renovated and rethought more than once. But the question is simpler. Which Carlsbad course would you pick to settle a match between two good players? This one, and it is not particularly close.

## 2Park Hyatt Aviara Golf Club

Aviara is Arnold Palmer's course through flower lined canyons above the Batiquitos Lagoon, and it is the prettiest round in town by a wide margin. Palmer built resort golf that flatters without insulting you: wide enough to swing, shaped enough to think, and conditioned the way a course attached to a five star hotel has to be.

Second place is both praise and verdict. Aviara's beauty is landscaped rather than found, and a few holes feel arranged for the photograph first and the shot second. Golfers on a honeymoon schedule should ignore this ranking and book Aviara first. Golfers keeping score should not.

## 3Omni La Costa Resort Legends Course

Legends is the second course at La Costa and has lived in the Champions Course's shadow for so long that visitors routinely skip it, which is a mistake they share with most ranking lists. The bones are older California resort golf, a more intimate scale, and stretches that feel like the La Costa the tour pros knew decades ago.

It ranks third on ceiling. The highs are lower, the closing holes less demanding, and a two round visitor should play Champions twice before doubling back here. A local member of the resort rotation, though, might honestly prefer Legends on an ordinary Tuesday. Rankings are about the best day, and on its best day it is a step behind.

## 4The Crossings at Carlsbad

The Crossings is the public option, a municipal course on a hilltop with ocean views and a price that belongs to a different category than everything above it. The elevation is the story: climbs, drops, wind off the water, and a round that feels more rugged than its resort neighbors.

Last place here comes with an asterisk the size of a scoreboard. On value, the Crossings wins this list going away, and for a Carlsbad resident it is probably the most important course in town. The golf is a clear step below the three resort courses in design and conditioning, and this list scores the golf first. Book it as your second round, play it in the afternoon wind, and it will earn its place in the trip.

A note on how to use this list. The two La Costa courses and Aviara sit within a short drive of each other, and a two day trip can play all three without a single long transfer, which is rarer in Southern California than it should be. Play Champions first, while your swing is fresh and your standards are high. Save Aviara for the morning you want the camera out. Let the Crossings fill the afternoon slot you would otherwise waste, and it will overdeliver against the modest expectations its green fee creates.

Carlsbad will never outgun the desert or the Peninsula for drama. What it sells is competence at a high level, in perfect weather, five minutes from the beach. Some weeks that is exactly the right product.
