Town Rankings / Wyoming

Cheyenne is the capital, the rodeo town, the place where Wyoming keeps its government and a lot of its wind. Its golf is older than you might expect. The country club dates to 1913, which the record names as Wyoming's oldest club. In a state this young, that is a real head start, and the ranking reflects it.

Three anchors make the list: the old private club, the city course by the runways, and a third public option that fills out the bench. Nobody should pretend this is a deep field. It is a small capital city's golf, honest and limited, and we rank it that way, golf first, then the day, then how hard it is to get on.

## 1Cheyenne Country Club

The country club gets the top spot on age, continuity, and the simple fact that a club surviving from 1913 in Cheyenne has earned the benefit of the doubt. Wyoming weather, Wyoming winters, and a small membership base have closed older clubs in easier places. This one is still here, still private, still the center of serious golf in town.

Longevity is not the whole argument. A club that old settles into its ground. The routing stops being a design on paper and becomes the way members have walked the place for generations, and that familiarity produces the kind of local knowledge golf that visitors underestimate for about four holes and then respect for the rest of the round.

The concession is access, as always with a private club at No. 1. Most readers will need an invitation, and a ranking that puts an unplayable course first owes you that warning up front. If you cannot get on, skip to No. 2 and you will still have a fine day.

But best means best, not easiest to book. On the evidence in the record, the oldest club in the state, in the capital, is the top of this list until somebody takes it from them.

## 2Airport Golf Club

Airport Golf Club is the city course by the runways, and the name tells you the experience before you get there. Planes overhead, open ground, wind with nothing to stop it. Some golfers hear that as a flaw. We hear it as character, and as the most democratic golf in Cheyenne: public, bookable, and priced for the people who actually live here.

It ranks second because it cannot match the club's history or its controlled conditions, and it should not try. Its job is different. It is where Cheyenne plays after work, where a visitor without connections can get a tee time, and where the wind will test your ball flight more honestly than a sheltered course ever will.

The knock is setting. A runway is not a mountain view, and no one will write poetry about the scenery. Conceded. The golf still has to be played, and in a crosswind a plain hole gets interesting fast.

## 3Prairie View Golf Course

Prairie View fills the third spot, and we will be candid about what that means here. The payload for this town gives us its name and its place on the bench, not a design pedigree or a famous history, so this ranking will not invent one for it. It is the other public option, the change of pace, the course that keeps Cheyenne from being a two-course town.

That role counts for something. Towns with only a private club and one municipal can feel closed to a new golfer. A third door, even an ordinary one, keeps the game open.

Cheyenne will never be a golf trip. It is a stop, a capital, a rodeo in July and wind the rest of the year, with an old club that has outlasted almost everything around it. Play the club if you can. Play by the runways if you cannot. Either way you will know what Wyoming golf is by the turn.
