The Best Golf Courses in Corpus Christi

Five minutes apart on the bay sit two city golf courses, and between them they explain Corpus Christi better than any visitor guide. Lozano and Oso Beach are both municipal, both cheap, both exposed to the same afternoon wind that comes off the water and turns a stock short iron into a two-club decision. Morning golf here is one sport. Afternoon golf, when the bay breeze stands up, is another one entirely, and the locals who play early are not being quaint. They are being smart.

The bench is three courses deep and we will present it as such. One private club, two munis five minutes apart. No resort golf, no destination name, nothing that draws a golf trip on its own. Corpus golf is a local's game played in a beautiful, windy, salt aired setting that the courses themselves mostly treat as ordinary. We score the golf first, then the day, then access, and on access this little list is nearly perfect. Two thirds of it belongs to anybody with a few dollars and a free morning.

1Corpus Christi Country Club

The country club is the best golf in Corpus Christi, as it is in most cities this size, on the usual grounds: private money for conditioning, a membership that keeps its course as a point of pride, and a test built for players who will face it every week rather than pass through once. On the bay side of Texas, a maintained course is no small thing. Salt air and wind punish neglect, and the club's surfaces are its argument.

The concession is that the gap here is smaller than the club model usually produces. Corpus Christi Country Club is a good members' course, not a famous one, and the two city courses below it are good enough at their jobs that a ranking based on value or on belonging to the city would shuffle this list completely. We keep the club first on the golf alone. It is where the city's best players test themselves, and a town ranking should say so before it says anything clever.

2Lozano Golf Center

Lozano is the flagship of the city's pair, the muni that Corpus golfers name first, and its position five minutes from Oso Beach makes the two courses a matched set that a visiting golfer can play in a single day without trying. Lozano carries the bigger reputation of the two, the course where the city game concentrates, leagues, regulars, and the better local players who never joined the club.

Its second place comes with a standing asterisk about the wind. Played in the morning calm, Lozano is a friendly municipal test. Played at three in the afternoon with the bay breeze up, it becomes a ball flight examination that would humble players who shoot their handicap in still air. That dual character is a virtue in a ranking that values the golf. A course that changes its questions with the weather keeps its regulars honest, and Lozano's regulars are honest golfers.

3Oso Beach Municipal Golf Course

Oso Beach is the second city course, the one by the bay its name describes, and being the second muni in a two muni town gives it a clear identity: the slightly scruffier, slightly more exposed sibling, played by the golfers who prefer its side of the five minute divide. Loyalties in Corpus run by neighborhood and by habit, and Oso's loyalists argue their course takes the wind more squarely and punishes the tourist's stock shot more fairly.

We rank it third on the overall quality of the test and the upkeep, a half step behind Lozano and a full step behind the club, which is roughly where Corpus Christi itself ranks it. The closing truth is that third place here still means a public course on the Texas coast, walkable, affordable, and windy enough to make you a better player against your will.

When the afternoon wind drops and the bay goes flat and silver, the last groups at Lozano and Oso play the same calm home holes five minutes apart, two city courses emptying into the same evening. Corpus never built a famous course. It built two honest ones, and kept them cheap. There are worse golf towns to be from.
