Town Rankings / Alabama

Dothan is peanut country, the working capital of Alabama's Wiregrass, and its golf comes in the regional style: humid, flat to rolling, priced for the people who actually live there. This is a two-course town for ranking purposes, one public Trail facility with more holes than the town strictly needs and one private country club. No filler, no third entry invented to make the list look longer. Two real options, and they are not close in kind, which makes the ranking a genuine choice about what golf in a town like this is for.
We score the golf first, then the day, then access and value. In Dothan those criteria split cleanly. The best golf a visitor can buy is obvious. The best golf in a member's life is a different course, and both claims get their hearing.
Highland Oaks gives the Wiregrass 36 Trail holes plus a nine, which is a staggering amount of golf to set down outside a town of Dothan's size. Two full Robert Trent Jones Trail courses and a nine-hole addition mean a visiting golfer can play a long weekend here without repeating himself, and the Trail standard applies: big, muscular golf, built to a scale Alabama mostly reserves for its resort corridors, maintained to a level a small market could never support on its own.
That is the Trail bargain and Dothan got the good end of it. The concession Trail critics always make is fair here too. Trail golf can feel manufactured, the earth moved because the blueprint said so, the difficulty dialed up by length and water rather than discovered in the ground. Highland Oaks is not subtle golf. But subtlety is not what a two-course town needs from its public flagship. It needs volume, quality, and a test that holds up to repeat play, and on all three Highland Oaks is the clear No. 1 in Dothan. For the public golfer it is not close.
The country club is the other Dothan, the established local game: members who have played the same ground for decades, a social center as much as a golf course, and a test that lives on familiarity rather than scale. Private club golf in a town like Dothan is not about impressing visitors. It is about the Saturday game that has run since before the Trail existed, and the club does that job with the quiet confidence of a place that has never needed to advertise.
The honest concession cuts the other way than usual. If you are a member, this is your No. 1 and the Trail facility is the place you take out-of-town guests. The ranking puts it second because the golf itself, hole for hole against 45 Trail holes, does not carry the same weight, and because a ranking visitors can use has to reckon with the door. Behind the door, Dothan Country Club may be the best golf life in the Wiregrass. The list can only rank what it can compare, and on the comparable evidence the Trail wins.
In late summer the heat sits on the Wiregrass like a held breath and the sensible tee times are early and late. The Trail courses take the morning crowd, the club takes its members, and peanut country golf goes on being exactly what it should be: humid, friendly priced, and better than outsiders expect.
