Some golf courses inherit their land from farmers or developers. Soldier Hollow inherited its from the Olympics. The Midway venue that hosted biathlon at the 2002 Winter Games, where racers shot at targets in the snow, is now a 36-hole golf facility, and the cross-country trails make unusually good bones for fairways.

Heber City and the Heber Valley sit on the Wasatch Back, the quieter side of the mountains from Salt Lake City, with Mount Timpanogos filling the windscreen. The golf here is altitude golf in a farming valley: four courses in this ranking, two of them sharing a driveway, one older local favourite, one resort course built around a crater. We score the golf first. The Olympic land wins.

## 1Soldier Hollow Golf Course Gold Course

Gene Bates turned the Olympic venue into two courses, and the Gold is the championship half of the pair, the one that plays up into the foothills and asks the longer questions. Former biathlon terrain gives it natural movement that manufactured mountain golf rarely achieves: the holes follow ground that was shaped by winter sport and weather, not by a grading plan trying to look interesting.

The concession is that mountain golf at altitude flatters everybody's distance and can hide a loose swing for 17 holes. The Gold Course finds you out eventually, usually when the wind comes down the valley in the afternoon. It is the clear No. 1 in this valley, and one of the better public tests in Utah.

## 2Wasatch Mountain Golf Course

Wasatch Mountain, in Midway, is the older local favourite, and locals will tell you so with some heat. It is a state park course in the true sense, mountain holes under the peaks, the kind of place Utah golfers have played for decades and measure every newcomer against. Its setting, tucked against the Wasatch in Wasatch Mountain State Park, is the prettiest golf ground in the valley.

Why second, then? Because Soldier Hollow's Gold asks more of a good player, more often. Wasatch Mountain wins on affection and on scenery. Golf first means it takes the silver, and its loyalists are welcome to disagree. That argument is half the fun of a two-course valley.

## 3Soldier Hollow Golf Course Silver Course

The Silver is the friendlier sibling, the course you play when the Gold has humbled you or when the group includes golfers who came for the valley rather than the examination. Sharing the Olympic ground gives it the same natural movement at a gentler pitch.

Third place for a facility's second course is no insult. It means the best address in Heber Valley golf holds two of the top three spots, and a visitor can play 36 in a day without moving the car.

## 4Homestead Resort Crater Springs Golf Course

Crater Springs rounds out the list at the Homestead Resort in Midway, golf built around the resort's famous geothermal crater. It is resort golf in the honest sense: pleasant, scenic, designed to send guests back to dinner happy rather than to test a handicap.

That is a legitimate job. It is just not the job this ranking rewards most, and against an Olympic venue and a beloved state park course, fourth is where resort golf lands. Play it on the easy day of the trip, in the evening light, and it will do exactly what it promises.

The valley keeps its own counsel on the back side of the Wasatch, skiers rushing past to Park City, golfers stopping for ground where Olympians once raced on skis. In summer, empty and green, it might be the better inheritance.
