Town Rankings / Mississippi

For a stretch of autumns, the PGA Tour came to Jackson. The Sanderson Farms Championship set up at the Country Club of Jackson, the trucks and the ropes and the grandstands landed in a neighborhood that otherwise keeps a low profile, and then the tournament moved on and the city kept the memory and the conditioning standards. That is the top of this list in one picture. Jackson golf has a clear headliner, a strong second out in Madison, and then a working bench of private, public, and municipal golf that serves the people who actually live here.

That is most Mississippi capitals, honestly. This is not a resort corridor. Nobody flies to Jackson for a golf trip, and the ranking does not pretend otherwise. We score the golf first, then the day, then what it takes to get on. Tour proof counts. So does a city course that stays open for everybody.

## 1Country Club of Jackson

The Sanderson Farms Championship did not land here by accident. Tour events need width in the right places, greens that can be set up to test professionals without embarrassing them, and a membership willing to hand the place over for weeks. The Country Club of Jackson had all of that, and hosting the event before it moved is the single strongest credential on this list.

The concession is access. This is a private club, and the ranking of a course most readers cannot play has to be honest about that. A tour resume earns the top spot anyway. In a town without a public course of remotely comparable pedigree, the best golf in Jackson sits behind a gate, and pretending otherwise to flatter the public options would be worse than the gate.

## 2Annandale Golf Club (Madison)

Annandale, out in Madison, is the other serious private address in the metro and the standing argument against the order above. Its partisans have a real case. The club has its own long association with high level golf in Mississippi, the setting in Madison is quieter and more spacious than anything inside the city, and plenty of good players in the area will tell you, without being asked twice, that this is the better members course.

We keep it second on one narrow ground: when the Tour had to pick a Jackson area stage, the pick is a matter of record, and records outrank clubhouse opinion. It is a close second. If your host offers Annandale, do not hold out for the other invitation.

## 3Colonial Country Club Jackson

Colonial is the in-town private alternative, the club for golfers who want the membership life without building their week around a drive to Madison or Pearl. It does not carry the tournament file of the two clubs above it, and that gap is the ranking. What it offers is standing: a established Jackson institution, a regular game, a course its members know the way you only learn a place by playing it two hundred times.

The honest limit is that Colonial's case rests on belonging rather than on architecture anyone outside Mississippi discusses. That is fine. Most golf in America works exactly that way. Third here is a compliment about durability, not a claim about fame.

## 4Patrick Farms Golf Club (Pearl)

Patrick Farms, across the river in Pearl, is where this list turns public, and it is the round a visitor can actually book. Semi-public golf in a metro like this one lives or dies on conditioning relative to price, and Patrick Farms has held its place in the local rotation by being a fuller test than the typical daily fee option around Jackson.

The concession writes itself: it is not in the architectural conversation with the private clubs above it. Nothing open to everyone in central Mississippi is. But a ranking that only counts courses a reader cannot play is a directory, not a guide, and Patrick Farms is the first name on this list that takes a tee time from a stranger. That earns fourth, comfortably.

## 5Sonny Guy Municipal Golf Course

Sonny Guy is the city course, and the hook for this whole list named it as such for a reason. Municipal golf is the load-bearing wall of the game in a city like Jackson. It is where beginners are allowed to be bad, where the after work nine happens, where the price never becomes the story of the day.

We will not inflate it. Sonny Guy sits fifth because the golf above it is stronger, full stop. But take it away and Jackson golf gets smaller and more private overnight, and a list that ranks the town's golf should say so plainly. Every town on this site with a surviving muni should count itself lucky. Plenty have lost theirs.

The last light in Jackson falls on fairways that mostly belong to members, and one scruffy city course still taking everybody's money at the window. That ratio tells you the town's golf story better than any ranking could.
