The Best Golf Courses in Jonesboro

Jonesboro is a flat Delta-edge city in northeast Arkansas that grows its golf the way it grows everything else, steadily and without much national attention. Arkansas State gives the town a university anchor, and the golf scene sorts itself around that fact: a private club near the university's orbit, an older country club in town, and a public course out in the suburbs doing the daily work. Nobody flies to Jonesboro for golf. The people who play here live here, and the ranking should read that way.

That makes this a thin-bench list and we will treat it as one. Three courses, no national names, no architect credits in the record beyond the public course's designer. We rank the golf first, then the day, then access, and in a town like this access pulls harder than usual, because the difference between the best course and the most useful one is the whole argument.

1RidgePointe Country Club

RidgePointe takes the top spot as the Jonesboro area's leading private club, the course tied to the Arkansas State side of town and the one local golfers name when asked where the best golf is played. Private clubs in mid-size Arkansas cities live on exactly this reputation: the strongest membership game, the best-kept test, the course that hosts the rounds that matter locally.

The concession is the familiar one, sharpened by scale. In a city this size, a private No. 1 serves a small slice of the golfing public, and its public record is thin enough that this ranking leans on standing rather than specifics. We are comfortable with that, stated out loud. RidgePointe is No. 1 because every account of Jonesboro golf puts it there, and inventing hole-by-hole evidence we do not have would be worse than saying so.

2Jonesboro Country Club

Jonesboro Country Club is the town's namesake club, the older in-town private option, and second place here is essentially the story of Jonesboro itself: the established institution now sharing the stage with the newer power near the university. For its members, the calculus is different, and club golf is mostly habit, friendship, and geography. The course five minutes from home beats the better course across town for a Tuesday game.

Ranked on the golf and its standing, it sits a step behind RidgePointe, and the step is not large. If the two swapped places next year on the strength of conditioning or a renovation, nobody who follows Jonesboro golf would call it a scandal.

3Sage Meadows Golf Club

Sage Meadows is the public course, a Tom Clark design in Jonesboro's suburbs, and it is the only name on this list a visitor can book without knowing somebody. That matters more in Jonesboro than in a resort town, because the public game here is the game for most local golfers too. A named architect, a full-size layout, suburban convenience: as municipal-tier golf goes in northeast Arkansas, that is a respectable hand.

It finishes third on quality, not importance. Measured by rounds actually played by Jonesboro residents, Sage Meadows might lead this list outright. Measured as golf, it gives up too much to the two clubs. Both measurements are honest; a best-courses ranking uses the second one, and notes the first on the way out, under Delta skies that make an evening nine feel longer than it is.
