Town Rankings / Rhode Island

Rumford is a village inside East Providence, close enough to the city to hear it and far enough to ignore it, and it holds one of the most admired small golf courses in America. That is not local booster talk. Players who collect great short courses, the ones under 6,500 yards that defend themselves with brains instead of length, put Rumford's Wannamoisett on the short list of exhibits, usually near the top. A village of triple-deckers and parish churches is an unlikely place for a masterclass in compact design. Golf is full of unlikely places.

Two private clubs make the bench, both old, both closed to the public, and separated by the clearest gap between first and second on this Rhode Island run. We score the golf first, then the day, then access. Access is a locked gate twice over, so this ranking is settled by golf alone, and the golf at the top is a seminar.

## 1Wannamoisett Country Club

Wannamoisett is Donald Ross's compact masterpiece: roughly 6,400 yards, on a small piece of Rumford ground, and defended so cleverly that length never gets a chance to matter. Ross did on this tight property what lesser architects need twice the acreage to attempt. The routing wastes nothing. Greens sit at angles that make the safe side of the fairway the wrong side, approaches have to be shaped rather than merely struck, and a player who overpowers a hole here usually discovers, one shot later, what the hole was actually asking. Short courses are supposed to be breathers. This one is an argument that yardage was never the point.

The proof has been running in public since 1962. Wannamoisett hosts the Northeast Amateur, one of the top amateur events in the country, and elite amateurs are the hardest audience in golf to fool. They play everywhere, they compare notes, and they keep coming back to Rumford every summer to be examined by a course shorter than most of the ones they warmed up on. Fields like that do not return for sixty years out of politeness.

The concession: 6,400 yards is 6,400 yards, and a modern elite player can reach places Ross never imagined being reached. The course now defends itself with angles and green speeds more than with distance, and purists can argue about whether that is the test Ross intended. They argue about it at a course still hosting top amateur golf in its second century's neighbourhood, which rather settles the argument. Wannamoisett is No. 1 in Rumford and one of the best courses in Rhode Island at any length.

## 2Agawam Hunt

Agawam Hunt is Rumford's other sporting institution, a club built around hunting, tennis, and golf in the old multi-sport tradition, with a shorter, gentler course that serves its members the way club courses were meant to: sociable, walkable, and harder than it looks on the card. It sits in the same village, shares the same small geography, and has shared it for generations without needing to be the famous one. There is a real virtue in a club that knows its role this well.

The concession writes itself, though we will write it anyway: Agawam Hunt does not host a national amateur event, does not appear on architecture lists, and does not ask to. Its golf is a level below its neighbour's in design ambition, which in Rumford means finishing second to a course the whole country admires. Plenty of good clubs would take that trade.

Rumford's golf ends as a study in scale: one village, two clubs, and a 6,400-yard course that has spent sixty summers proving to the best amateurs in America that the longest examination in golf can come in a small package, if Donald Ross wrote the questions.
