The Best Golf Courses in Vail

Vail golf splits by altitude. Down in the village, a public course walks the flat valley floor under the Gore Range, about as pleasant a municipal setting as Colorado offers. Up and west near Wolcott, two courses share a ranch at 7,800 feet, where the air is thin, the ball flies forever, and the golf is built for destination visitors with destination budgets. Ranking Vail means ranking both worlds, scoring the golf first and letting the public course make its case on the day rather than the design.

A note on honesty: this valley has more golf than this list's four anchors, spread down toward Edwards and Eagle. These four are the Vail conversation, the two famous names on the ranch, the town course, and the club in Edwards that locals measure the others against.

1Red Sky Ranch Norman Course

The Norman Course at Red Sky takes No. 1 by the narrowest of margins over its sibling. Both courses sit at 7,800 feet above Wolcott on the same high ranch country, but the Norman reads as the sterner test, more willing to use the elevation changes and the open, exposed ground as part of the examination. At that altitude every shot is a calculation, a stock yardage plus a percentage, and the Norman makes you do the math under pressure, with trouble priced into the misses.

The concession is that Norman and Fazio at Red Sky are closer than the 1 and 2 suggest, and plenty of visitors walk off preferring the other one. Conditioning, service, views: identical tier. The pick here rewards the course with the slightly higher ceiling. If your group plays both, which is the correct way to do Red Sky, you will have this argument at dinner. It is a good argument to be able to have.

2Red Sky Ranch Fazio Course

The Fazio Course is the friendlier of the Red Sky pair by reputation, more scenic in its framing, a touch more generous in where it lets you miss, and for many players the more enjoyable round of the two. It shares the ranch, the altitude, and the resort machinery around the golf, the practice facilities and pacing of a place built to handle destination play without rushing it.

Second place on this list is no insult and the course's fans know the counter case by heart: resort golf is supposed to delight first, and the Fazio delights. It loses No. 1 only on the sternness tiebreak, the ranking's bias toward the harder examination. Play them on consecutive days, Fazio first, and the valley will have shown you its best public facing golf at full altitude, the ball sailing in that thin air like it has somewhere better to be.

3Sonnenalp Club Edwards

Down the valley in Edwards, Sonnenalp is the club option, semi private in character, built for the people who actually live in the Vail Valley and play all season. That local base gives it a different feel from Red Sky: less resort theater, more club routine, a course that has to work in June and September and for the member who has seen every hole a hundred times. By reputation the golf is solid, honest valley golf with the river country around it.

It lands third because Red Sky's two courses, whatever their resort packaging, are simply bigger tests on more dramatic ground. Sonnenalp wins on authenticity of use. If you moved to Edwards, this is the golf your life would run on, and that is worth more than a ranking slot can express.

4Vail Golf Club

Last on golf, first on the walk. Vail Golf Club is the valley floor public course under the Gore Range, flat enough to walk easily at altitude, which at this elevation is a kindness, affordable by valley standards, and open to anyone who books a time. The Gore Range does the heavy lifting visually; few municipal courses anywhere give you that wall of peaks as the backdrop to a routine approach shot.

The test is the gentlest here and the ranking says so plainly. But consider the whole picture: a visitor can land, walk a round beneath those peaks without a member, a package, or a second mortgage, and have a genuinely good day. Vail's list runs from a 7,800 foot resort pair down to a town course anyone can play. The valley floor at dusk, the range turning pink above the fairways, is where most people will actually experience it.
