The Best Golf Courses in Waco

Waco sits on the Brazos, halfway between Dallas and Austin, and for years its golf lived in the shadow of both. Then the qualifiers started showing up. Ridgewood hosted a stop on the 2024 U.S. Amateur qualifier circuit, which is the USGA's way of saying a course can examine good players without embarrassing itself.

Baylor golf centres on Ridgewood and Cottonwood Creek, and that pairing tells you the structure of Waco golf in one line: a private club that tests the college game, a city course that carries the public game, and one more option out on the edge of town. We score the golf first, then the day, then access. The private club wins on golf. It does not win by as much as private clubs usually do, because Waco's public option is better than most.

1Ridgewood Country Club Waco

A course that hosts U.S. Amateur qualifying has to do specific things well. It has to punish a loose drive without relying on water everywhere, and it has to make good players think on the greens. Ridgewood does that work, which is why Baylor's programme treats it as home turf and why the qualifier came here rather than to the public courses down the road.

The concession is the familiar one. It is a private club, and Waco is not short of golfers who will never see it from inside the gate. Fair enough. But a ranking that pretended the city's best golf was public, when its own university and the USGA both point at the same private course, would be lying to be polite.

2Cottonwood Creek Golf Course

Cottonwood Creek is the reason this list stays interesting. As the city course in the Baylor orbit, it carries a double load: everyday public golf for Waco, and a genuine role in the local college golf ecosystem. City courses that matter to a university programme are usually a cut above the municipal average, better kept, more thoughtfully set up, and played by better golfers more often.

It finishes second, not first, because Ridgewood's test is sterner at the top end. But on value and access it wins the town outright, and for a visiting golfer with one free afternoon in Waco, this is the tee time to book. That is not a consolation prize. It is the most useful sentence on this page.

3Bear Ridge Golf Club

Bear Ridge fills out the bench as the third option, the course Waco golfers argue about in the way locals argue about a third quarterback. It gives the town depth, a different round from the two above it, and a place to play when Cottonwood Creek is packed on a Saturday.

What it does not do is threaten the order. The top of Waco golf is settled by a private club with a qualifier on its record and a city course with a university behind it. Bear Ridge is the supporting act, and there is no shame in the role. Every golf town needs a third course. Most, frankly, need a second one this credible first.

Waco's golf, like the town itself lately, is better than its reputation on the interstate. Stop for the qualifier course if you can get on, the city course if you cannot, and either way you will leave thinking the Brazos deserved a longer look.
