The Best Golf Courses in Wichita Falls

Wichita Falls plays its golf the way North Texas does everything in August: early, in wind, without complaining. This is flat, hard country near the Oklahoma line, and the golf matches it. No mountains to frame a hole. No ocean. Just sky, breeze, and courses that have been sorting out local golfers for a very long time.

The country club dates to 1914, which in Texas golf terms makes it an elder. Weeks Park is the city championship course, the public proving ground. Between those two poles, the old private test and the muni where titles are actually contested, sits the whole story of golf in this town. We rank the golf first, then the day, then access, and the century-old club still comes out on top. But the gap is smaller than 1914 might expect.

1Wichita Falls Country Club

Longevity is not a ranking criterion by itself. Plenty of old clubs coast. But a club founded in 1914 that remains the standard its town measures against has usually kept the one thing that matters: a course good enough that generations of the best local players chose to belong to it. In a town this size, the club is where the strongest games have always concentrated, and the golf reflects that.

The concession: it is private, in a town where the public game is unusually proud of itself. A visitor cannot simply show up. That costs it on access, and on a different list, one weighted toward the travelling golfer, Weeks Park would take the top spot. On golf alone, the club holds.

2Weeks Park Golf Course The Champions Course

The full name does some bragging, The Champions Course, but Weeks Park has the receipts in the only currency that counts locally: it is where the city championship is played. Municipal courses host city titles by default in plenty of towns. Here the designation feels earned rather than administrative, the public course as the town's real arena, open to anybody with the entry fee and the nerve.

That openness is its argument. The best public golf in Wichita Falls, carrying the town's championship, available to the people who actually live there. It loses this ranking on the depth of the test at the very top, not on character, and the margin is the honest kind: close enough to argue about in the grill room.

There is also the wind to consider, because in Wichita Falls the wind is a design feature whether anybody designed it or not. A public course that hosts a city championship in this country has to reward the low, controlled ball and punish the high, lazy one, and Weeks Park's reputation rests partly on exactly that sorting. Golfers who grow up playing it learn shots that travel well anywhere in Texas.

3River Creek Golf Course Burkburnett

River Creek requires a short confession about geography. It is in Burkburnett, up the road toward the Red River, and it makes this list because Wichita Falls' bench, after the club and the city course, runs thin enough that the region's next option belongs in the frame. Locals already treat the drive as part of the same golf scene.

As a course it plays the supporting role without pretending otherwise: another round, a different set of holes, relief when the two in-town courses are full. Third place here is a statement about the town as much as the course. Wichita Falls has two courses that matter and a neighbour that helps. Plenty of bigger Texas cities cannot say the first part.
