The Best Golf Courses in Worley

Worley is a small town on the Coeur d'Alene Reservation in the Idaho Panhandle, and it holds a distinction out of all proportion to its size: the best public golf course in Idaho is here, on tribal land, in a community most golfers could not find on a map before the course put it there. That is the whole ranking problem in one sentence. Worley has one hometown course, and it is a giant.

The second spot therefore imports help. The Coeur d'Alene Resort course sits up the road by the lake, close enough that golfers staying in the area play both in the same trip, and a Worley list with one entry would be a press release rather than a ranking. So this is a two course list, honestly labeled: one course that belongs to Worley, one that belongs to its weekend. We score the golf first, then the day, then access, and both of these are public, which makes this the rare ranking where access argues about price and nothing else.

1Circling Raven Golf Club

Circling Raven is a Gene Bates design spread across 620 acres of tribal land, meadows and wetlands and timber on the reservation, and Golfweek has kept it at or near the top of its Idaho public rankings for years, often at No. 1 outright. The scale is the first thing to understand. Six hundred twenty acres for one golf course is two to three times the normal footprint, which means holes that never see each other, fairways with country around them, and a round that feels like a journey across a small nation rather than a walk around a subdivision. Bates used the room the way it deserved to be used, with a big, confident course that asks long questions and gives the land the last word.

The concession is isolation, and it cuts in both directions. Circling Raven is a destination you commit to, not a round you squeeze in, and the same emptiness that makes the golf feel enormous can make a bad weather day feel endless. Conditioning at this scale, on this budget, also fights the acreage every season. None of it displaces the course. When the most respected public ranking in the game keeps calling a course in Worley the best public test in Idaho, the burden of proof sits on everybody else, and nobody in this state has met it.

2Coeur d'Alene Resort Golf Course

The resort course is here as the visiting team, and it is some visiting team: the famous floating green, the movable island par 3 in the lake, the boat taxi to putt out, the most polished resort operation in the Northwest. Golfers base themselves at the lake, play the photograph, and then drive down to Worley for the substance, and the two courses have settled into that partnership so completely that ranking one without the other would misdescribe how golf actually happens in this corner of Idaho.

Second, on a technicality that is also a principle. Head to head as pure experiences the gap between these courses is arguable all evening. The resort's conditioning and theater are beyond anything a tribal course on 620 acres attempts, and its signature hole is more famous than every hole at Circling Raven combined. But this is Worley's list, the anchor rule matters, and on the golf alone, on the examination Bates built in the meadows, Circling Raven holds. The resort keeps its own town's No. 1. It does not get Worley's too.

A town of a few hundred people, a course the size of a ranch, and a national ranking that keeps coming back to the same name. Worley is the strongest argument in Idaho that great public golf does not need a city around it.
